Earplugs for ADHD
ADHD can have a big impact on your life. Fortunately, there are many things you can do to help you function better and more comfortably on a daily basis. Earplugs for ADHD are among one of the most valuable tools for ADHD sufferers.
What is ADHD?
ADHD is the abbreviation for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. This is a somewhat misleading name, because ADHD sufferers do not so much lack attention - they simply cannot regulate their attention (and energy) well.
DSM-5 defines ADHD as a neurobiological developmental disorder in which not enough of certain neurotransmitters are produced in the brain. This causes persistent and consistent symptoms of inattention and/or hyperactivity/impulsivity, which significantly impede development and day-to-day functioning.
Why can earplugs help with ADHD?
As a person with ADHD, you experience the world in a unique and intense way. Sensory stimuli such as sounds, lights, smells that neurotypical people can easily ignore or 'filter', can quickly become overwhelming for you. If you were to compare the brain to a sink, most neurotypical people have a dripping tap. The information that trickles out is filtered before it goes down the drain. When you have ADHD, the tap is fully opened, so everything comes in at once and far too fast.
You feel every sensation, you see every detail in your field of vision, you hear every sound. It all comes in immediately and with full impact, so the brain is not always able to filter out the right information from that stream of stimuli. The 'sink' overflows and the parasympathetic nervous system then activates the fight, flight or freeze response. The result: you become overstimulated.

Earplugs for ADHD
Reducing external distractions
Earplugs for concentration muffle
background noise, making you less likely to be distracted by what is happening around you. You can then better focus your attention on what you are doing.
This also makes you feel calmer and more in control.
Preventing overstimulation
Like many others with neurodivergences, those with
ADHD are often easily overstimulated. Sounds that others may not find disturbing or even notice (such as the hum of a refrigerator or people having a conversation across the hallway) can be particularly frustrating or even painful for you. Earplugs act as a kind of buffer; they reduce the intensity of auditory stimuli, thus preventing sensory overload. This also helps lower your stress.
Help in switching between tasks
Many persons with ADHD have difficulty switching between tasks. If you are distracted by background noises at the same time, this makes it even more difficult. Wearing earplugs improves your ability to concentrate, making it easier to shift your attention to another task.
Contribute to a better night's sleep
Difficulty in getting (and staying) asleep is a common problem among those with ADHD. Earplugs for sleep can't take away your hyperactivity and/or noisy thoughts, of course, but they do help keep you from staying awake or being woken up by background noises.
